ROMAN GLASS
Roman Glass

Roman glass used in jewelry is shards from jars, goblets, and other vessels. It is estimated to be between 900 to 1200 years old. The style of blue green glass in my jewelry was excavated from the Nimroz province of Afghanistan. Similar ancient glass has been found in northern Africa. The typical shades of blue and green come from different mineral impurities in the sand during the time the glass was made, and the surface iridescence resulted from oxidation over time. There are a number of problems related to the study of excavated glass.

Roman Glass Beads

Glass was traded and exchanged as simple containers for oils, perfumes etc. It was circulated throughout the world as far as Asia, Northern China, and Europe. It was also shipped in large quantities as large glass lumps and discarded broken vessels, suitable for remelting and making new glass inexpensively. Thus the glass of a bottle made in Egypt or Rome for example may have been recycled any where in the civilized world. A new object may have been recycled into another shape or decoration suggesting another origination location. Ancient glass makes beautiful contemporary jewelry.
